about

This is a quick piano piece I wrote for my sister, Jana Atkins, who passed away on April 25, 2016, after a sudden illness. She went into the hospital with a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung). She thought she would be able to get out in just a couple days but, from my understanding, she had a second one which the doctors weren't able to catch in time...or was much harder to get to which led to her having to get admitted into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and put on a ventilator. While on the ventilator, she developed pneumonia and never recovered. She also had a condition known as Sjögren's Syndrome (which made her more susceptible to pneumonia) which likely slightly contributed to her death among others while in the hospital.

Jana was a music librarian and musician who played a myriad of instruments, mainly trumpet in jazz bands. She was the first person that I can remember that showed me an instrument and even let me play on her cornet which sparked my interest in playing music since I was a child. She had a dry and sarcastic sense of humor and was loved by many. She didn't want a funeral or memorial or plaque because she didn't want anyone making a big deal over her. Although this was hard for the family to accept, we will honor her wishes. This is simply my way of saying goodbye.

I wrote this in different movements which you can hear as the track shifts.
1) Life as we know it 0:00
2) Sudden illness 0:28
3) Hope for improvement 0:48
4) Slipping away 1:09
5) Remembering life 1:29
6) Heaven is calling 2:03
7) Ascension 2:29
8) No more pain 2:41
